Our Leather Story

At HOUND DOG we believe the finest dog accessories begin with the finest materials.  Every collar, lead and piece we create starts with full grain vegetable tanned leather.  This is the same premium material used by Britain's most respected saddlers and craftspeople for centuries.

The leather we choose

We source only the best quality full grain vegetable tanned leather.  Unlike cheaper alternatives that are sanded down or chemically treated,  full grain leather is hardwearing and retains the hide's natural character.  Every mark, grain pattern and variation tells a story.   Vegetable tanning is a slow, traditional process.  It uses natural tannins from tree bark rather than harsh chemicals, and it takes weeks, not days, for this technique to develop.  The result is leather that is stronger, more durable and develops a rich patina over time.  It grows more beautiful with every walk, every adventure, every year.

British heritage, timeless craft

Our approach to leatherwork is rooted in British craftsmanship traditions.  We personally  cut, rivet and finish each piece by hand in our studio.  We use techniques passed down through generations of leather craftsmen.  Our solid brass hardware combines extreme durability with a timeless, luxury aesthetic.  It is rustproof, hypoallergenic and doesn't corrode ensuring that every component will stand the test of time alongside the leather itself.

A patina worth earning

When you choose HOUND DOG, you are investing in the best.  The leather will soften with time, the lead becoming butter soft in your hand and collar shaped like a second skin to your dogs neck.  Your pieces will gradually darken and develop a unique patina that reflects your shared journeys.  Scratches and scuffs become part of the story,  reasons to cherish not replace.  This is leather as it should be.  Honest, enduring and unmistakably British.

Our leather care guide

The beauty of leather is that it durable and hardwearing and can be left to age naturally. However, if you want to enhance your leather's appearance then regularly apply a high quality dubbin or leather feed to keep the leather soft and looking beautiful.

Dubbin is a a traditional, waxy leather conditioner which protects and is made from a blend of natural beeswax and oils.  It has been used for centuries to maintain and shield quality leather as it:

• Waterproofs the leather by creating a protective barrier

• Softens and conditions, preventing drying and cracking

• Restores natural oils lost through use and exposure

• Extends the life of the leather, keeping it supple and strong

This heritage treatment is perfectly suited to our premium grade full-grain leather and aligns with the heritage craftsmanship behind every HOUND DOG piece.

To treat your leather: simply remove any excess dirt with a damp, soft cloth and allow to dry naturally.  Regularly apply a high-quality dubbin with a clean cloth to keep the leather soft and looking beautiful.  We use solid brass We know that most dogs love the water however, try to avoid the collar getting soaking wet if possible.  On occasions if this does happen again just wipe it down with a clean, dry cloth.  Allow to dry naturally, not on a direct heat source, and then apply dubbin.

With care your piece will last you and your dog a lifetime.
